Cyclamate was so well recieved by consumers because of it's taste - it
was growing the sugar free or diet segment of the soft drink business
by leaps and bounds to record shares of the total soft drink business.
The sugar lobby sprang into action and spent millions buying our
wonderful federal legislators and combined with some research they
bought - which was horribly faulted - got cyclamates banned.

People in the USA rail about the strength of the military industrial
complex and it's lobbyists - agri business and healthcare lobbists are
at least as strong if not stronger.  The senate is vastly easier for
lobbyists to control and control it they do.  End of rant.
